H1N1 Flu Facts

A  person can spread swine flu before symptoms begin, and may be infectious for more than 7 days after becoming ill.  People who have  H1N1 infection are considered contagious as long as they have any symptoms. Children may be contagious for longer periods.

Symptoms of H1N1 are similar to those of the common flu
•     Fever and chills
•     Sore Throat
*     Cough
*     Headache, body aches and fatigue
•    Diarrhea and vomiting can also be present

Watch for these symptoms in children
•    Fever with rash        *  Slow to wake up or sluggish interaction
•    Dehydration            *  Severe Irritability
•    Fast breathing            *  Bluish skin color
•    Flu like symptoms may improve, then return and cough worsens

If a child has these symptoms they may be sent home.

How will the school help prevent the spread of swine flu in the classroom?
•    Encourage hand washing with soap and water.
•    Wipe down desks several times a week.
•    Sanitize doorknobs, drinking fountains phones, restrooms and lunchroom tables daily.
•     Review hand washing, hygiene, etc.
•    Encourage students to avoid touching mouth, face, and eyes.
•    Discuss proper ways to contain a sneeze or cough.
•    Send home children when they are ill.

How can parents help?
•    Talk to your children about healthy hygiene hibits.
•    Please keep your child home if they have any symptoms.
•    Notify the school that your student will be absent.
•    Do not send child back to school until symptom free for 24 hours.
•    Do not medicate a sick child then send them to school. This only masks the symptoms and does not cure them. They will still feel sick and be contagious to others.
•    Do not take your children out in public when they are kept home for health reasons.
