Taxonomy of Library Media Services
Level One: No involvement Teachers / [Students] do not use the services or materials found in the library media center.
Level Two Self Help Warehouse The facilities and materials are available for those [teachers / students] who independently search for them.
Level Three Individual Reference Assistance Individuals [teachers / [students] receive information and materials for specific needs at their request.
Level Four Spontaneous Interaction and Gathering Individuals [teachers / [students] receive information and materials as the need arises rather than as planned.
Level Five Cursory Planning The specialist is a problem solver who generates solutions and provides ideas [to teachers / students], usually in an informal setting and in a brief manner.
Level Six Planning Gathering The teacher [student] and specialist plan in advance and materials are gathered to assist in a specific unit.
Level Seven Evangelictic Outreach The specialist promotes multimedia individualized instruction [to teachers / students] through in-service and public relations.
Level Eight Scheduled Planning in the Support Role The specialist formally plans to work with [teachers] students in gathering, interpreting, and creating materials.
Level Nine Instructional Design, Level I The specialist participates in each step of development, execution, and evaluation of a unit as an equal, but detached, partner with the teacher [student].
Level Ten Instructional Design Level II The library media staff participates fully in all phases of a unit, including grading and responsibility for achievement.
Level Eleven Curriculum Development The specialist contributes to the planning and structure of the curriculum to be taught in the school or district.
