Search Strategies

Use of the period(.) If you enter a single word, the word and words or phrases beginning with the word are searched.

If you enter child Alexandria searches for all words beginning with child, including children, childhood, etc. If you enter child. you get only words with child.

Use of the question mark (?)If you do not know how to spell a word, enter the word preceded by a question mark. Alexandria then performs a "sounds like" (phonetic) search.

If you enter dinasar Alexandria searches for the words including dinosaur.

There are three ways to search for items

At this time, the "SEARCH ALL WORDS" option with any of the three following search options will give the best results.

A Simple Search for younger patrons or patrons who know specific information.

A Boolean Search for patrons who want more options when searching.

A Browse Search for patrons who are exploring for things without specific information available.

The default search for the Alpine District On-line Search is the more detailed Simple Search. If the term you use to search for an item comes up "empty," you may have to narrow or broaden your search criteria.

Once you have items on your Results List, you can:
